PhD Scholarship in Digitally Enhanced Radio Frequency Filters

National University of Ireland, Maynooth

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the area of filter design for frequency-flexible mobile communications. Passive filters are needed to handle the high power filtering challenges at radio frequencies in mobile phone basestations.  These are not flexible, thus preventing true reconfigurable radios. The challenge is to add digitally-controlled components around the passive filter that may help observe and then inject anti-phase signals into the filter outputs in order to assist the filtering function. This project has the opportunity to address one of the major problems in RF system design and we are seeking a passionate student with interests in communications, systems modelling and RF/microwave design.
The research, led by Dr. Ronan Farrell, will be undertaken in collaboration with the SFI Centre for Telecommunications Research (CTVR) and our partners, which include Bell Labs (Alcatel Lucent), NXP and Xilinx. There will be an opportunity for internships with our company partners, in Ireland and overseas.
Interested candidates should hold a first or upper second class honours degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a cognate discipline. Applicants who hold research masters in a relevant area are particularly welcomed. This work is inherently multidisciplinary and the successful applicant will need to collaborate with computer scientists, engineers and with industry.
Successful candidates will join a large multi-disciplinary team and be initially enrolled on a full-time Masters of Engineering Science, with a review after 18 months for progression to a PhD programme. The studentship will comprise of fees and an annual stipend of 17,000 Euros. The position is available to start in October 2012 or, upon agreement, the start date may be postponed to January 2012.
Applicants should supply by email a detailed CV including a detailed discussion of their latest work, two references and a complete list of publications. Please include FILTERS in the subject of your email. Applicants from outside of the EU are welcome to apply for all positions, however please state clearly your visa requirements in your initial emails. Please list your citizenship in your email subject.
