Project Title: Curating the Black Diaspora

University of Central Lancashire - School of Art, Design & Performance

Applications are invited for a full-time bursary available in the School of Art, Design & Performance.  The bursary is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress] and is open to both Home, EU and International students.  The bursary will cover the cost of tuition fees at the Home/EU rate.  International students will be required to fund the difference between the Home/EU and International fee rate.  The successful applicant will commence on 1 January 2013.  Please note deferred starts from this date will not be permitted. 
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project will look at  the recent history of visual art exhibitions by artists from the Black Diaspora and examine the current methods by which international museums and galleries construct the narratives and present them to audiences today.The project will act as a structural framework from which curatorial strategies relevant to future development  can be formed.
Working with artist curator Professor Lubaina Himid, the emphasis of the project will be geared towards generating new dialogues in which artists, audiences, curators and art historians can  work together to learn from each other to encourage innovative ways to exhibit.
There will be a number of unique opportunities as the project develops to stage small scale exhibitions in a range of venues and to work with many  artists and curators currently practicing.
Applicants should have, or expect to receive a minimum of UK 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area.
